TYPE ONE TREATMENT

TYPE 1

Our Type 1 WUI treatment method involves our hand crews going into a forested area which has been identified as a fire corridor and removing either dead or ‘non - merchantable’ accumulated fuels, in order to achieve our fuel management reduction goals.

TYPE 1 TREE REMOVAL

Within this type of WUI treatment, overstory stems larger than 17.5cm in diameter are retained.

All understory conifers smaller than 17.5cm in diameter are thinned to create a reduced density.

For the purpose of structural diversity and habitat values, small clumps of conifer regeneration under 17.5cm in diameter are also retained.

Fire resistant trees such as deciduous trees and western yew are retained.

TYPE 1 PRUNING

All leave trees are pruned to a height of 2.5m.  This removes the ladder fuels which could raise a fire into the overstory.

Dead branches that still have needles and fine branches are pruned to remove excess volatile oils.

TYPE 1 FINE FUEL ABATEMENT

Our Fine Fuel Abatement aims to Reduce accumulations of fine surface fuels by raking and burning.

  1. NEW DENVER 'TYPE 1' TREATMENT

Our field crew have been hard at work treating the area around carpenter creek, removing high levels of fuel and openning up the area for recreation. This treatment will also ensure the survival of larger trees and encourage their growth. Deciduous, fire resistent trees are left in place aswell as wildlife habitat.

  2. CARPENTER CREEK 'TYPE 1 TREATMENT'

The result of a type 1 treatment around carpenter creek. The field crew worked hard removing fuels which are then chipped to return to the soil and increase 'carbon offset'.

  3. CARPENTER CREEK BEFORE TREATMENT

A small example of the level of density around Carpenter Creek before treatment.

  4. SMALL FIRES

While in the field, during a type 1 treatment, crew members consistently tend to small fires they use to burn debris in order to keep the area clear of fuel. Burns only occur when the weather no longer proposes threat of wild fire.

  5. CHIP MULCH

We use a chipper wherever possible to discard of the piles of overgrowth that are removed. This provides mulch for the soil, puts organic matter back into the ground and aids Carbon Offset.

  6. WOOD READY TO BE CHIPPED
  7. SMALL BURN
  8. MATERIAL READY TO BE CHIPPED

The majority of fuel removed from a 'type 1' treatment is positioned into isles like these, the chipper then drives down the centre and chips the wood, creating mulch for the forest floor.

  9. CREATING FUEL BREAKS

The aim of WUI is to create sufficient fuel breaks around our towns and villages, to significantly reduce the risk of wildfire passing through residential areas.

  10. MATERIAL TO BE CHIPPED
  11. DISCUSSING TREES TO BE REMOVED

All of our treatments are very strategic and ecologically sensitive. We have in depth discussions about what will be cleared and there is always an on site supervisor overseeing and directing our crew.

  12. CONTROLLED FIRE BY THE SLOCAN LAKE
  13. FIELD CREW TREATING CARPENTER CREEK
  14. FIELD CREW PERFORMING 'TYPE 1" TREATMENT
  15. COMPLETED TREATMENT INCLUDING CHIPS
  16. MARKED WILD LIFE TREE

Our crew are always on the look out for habitat while treating areas. Trees with bird nests etc are marked clearly so as to be preserved.

  17. REMOVING POTENTIAL FUEL
  18. CREW MEMBER ASSESING A TREE

Great care is taken with the removal of each tree. Crew members asses the surrounding area to evaluate whether removal is necessary.

  19. DECIDUOUS TREES

We aim to leave all deciduous fire resistent trees in place.
