PONDEROSA AND WINLAW PRESCRIBED BURNS WERE A GREAT SUCCESS!

As part of our Slocan Valley Strategic Landscape Level Wildfire Protection Plan we have been working on the creation of Landscape Level fuel breaks throughout the valley to help protect our communities from Wildfire.

We have being using a multitude of tools to achieve this one of which is prescribed burning.

Prescribed burns are applied in areas that would have experienced frequent low intensity fires naturally. Due to decades of fire suppression a high level of fuel has accumulated in these areas creating a wildfire hazard for our communities.

Our two recent Prescribed burns in the Ponderosa and Winlaw areas were a great success and have helped to reset the areas to a more natural state therefore lowering the wildfire risk. Combined these burns have treated approximately 650 hectares of forest.

These burns are also a form of ecological restoration as these areas need low intensity fires to thrive.
